CHAPTER FORTY-SEVEN

Contact became infrequent between neighbors Stella Nickell and Sandy Scott as the weeks of the investigation piled up. When defense investigator Sal Ramos contacted Sandy for an interview, she called Jack Cusack. He told her she could decline if she wished, which she did. Sandy wondered if that had been some of the reason for Stella’s distance.

In October 1987, they finally crossed paths on the gravel road between their properties.

“Any news on the case?” Sandy asked.

Stella shook her head. There wasn’t much to report. “If the grand jury can’t or won’t reach a decision, then the case will be allowed to just fade away,” she said.

“Heard from Cindy at all?”

“No, I haven’t,” Stella replied. “But I have an idea where she is.”

Two days later, Cora Lee walked up the hill to get some tomatoes Sandy had promised. The visit was pleasant, but it was the last the two would share.

A week and a half later, another neighbor returned some books Cora Lee had borrowed.

“Stella’s mother doesn’t want to talk with you anymore.”
